The Poznań Bazaar is one of the most important symbols of Poznań and Greater Poland. It was established in 1838 thanks to the initiative of Karol Marcinkowski and the shareholding company he set up to build a hotel for Polish clientele and stores for Polish merchants. The hotel, which was named "Bazar," was built on Nowa Street, now Paderewskiego Street. Its construction was completed in 1841.
The Bazar quickly became the center of Polish economic, political and cultural life. It was also the most important mainstay of Polishness in the Prussian partition. It was in this building that the joint-stock company for the construction of the Polish Theater was constituted in 1871. At the end of the 19th century, the company bought a property on Marcinkowskiego Avenue, the reconstruction of which was completed in 1901. The history of the Bazaar has always been intertwined with the history of Poland. On December 26, 1918, it hosted Ignacy Jan Paderewski, whose arrival in Poznan was the impetus for the outbreak of the Wielkopolska Uprising (...)
