The patriotic telegram - also known as the "Kosciuszko telegram", first appeared in 1895 in Poznan on the initiative of Maria Lebinska and Teodora Kusztelanowa, who formed a Committee to issue congratulatory cards, called the Ladies' Committee or the Poznan Committee. Telegrams spread very quickly. They were mostly color lithographs with patriotic and historical themes, and featured images of historical figures, heroes of the struggle for independence, national symbols and emblems. Since 1912, the Society of People's Reading Rooms, an organization of great merit for the propagation of Polish culture, which in the Prussian partition established libraries and reading rooms with access to Polish literature, also dealt with the publication of telegrams. Telegrams were designed by well-known artists of the time, such as: Jerzy Hulewicz, Kazimierz Kościański, Tadeusz Szafrański, Franciszek Tatula, Wiktor Gosieniecki, Paulin Gardzielewski. Patriotic telegrams were still used after World War II to send wishes on occasions such as weddings.
