[CzeslawMilosz ]. Handwritten letter by Czeslaw Milosz regarding a forthcoming examination in literature, no date, from Berkeley.
Two-sided letter on 14x21.6 cm sheet. University of California letterhead printed "Berkeley: Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures". Milosz writes: "You will receive from the Department of Comparative Literature [...] a writing exam [...] in which also an exam in Polish literature [...]. These are Ph D exams in comparative literature. The oral exam is due in December, and I was to be the examiner in Polish literature." In view of the postponement of the exam, Miłosz hands over to Najder to conduct the exam in Polish literature ("the candidate is of Polish origin, he adds) and promises to prepare compulsory readings for the candidate. Under the text, he signs his full name. In the heading, Milosz addresses the addressee with the phrase "Mnogo Uważajemyj Gospodin Najder." Vertical fold of the sheet, good condition.
C. Milosz (1911-2004) - poet, prose writer, essayist, literary historian, translator, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 1980. From 1951 to 1993 he was in exile in France and the USA. After his departure, he was banned from printing in the People's Republic of Poland until 1980.
