Mieczyslaw Zaleski (born December 3, 1865 in Horyniec, died February 19, 1941 in Cracow) - titular field marshal lieutenant of the Imperial and Royal Army.
He was born in Horyniec, in the then Cieszanow district of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, in the family of a court clerk. In 1885, he graduated with honors from the Military Technical Academy in Vienna. He was appointed to the rank of second lieutenant with seniority on September 1, 1885, and was conscripted into the 1st Engineering Regiment in Olomouc. He was appointed to the rank of lieutenant with seniority on November 1, 1888, and in the same year became a student at the Vienna War School. In 1890, after graduation, he was commissioned as an officer assigned to the General Staff and was assigned to the Headquarters of the 30th Infantry Division in Lviv as a staff officer. During his studies and staff service, he remained a supernumerary officer of the 1st Engineering Regiment. In 1892 he was assigned to the Command of the 11th Corps in Lviv, and later transferred to the Topographical Bureau of the General Staff in Vienna. He was appointed to the rank of captain with seniority on November 1, 1893, and in 1896 was transferred to the 10th Corps Command in Przemyśl. In late 1898 and early 1899 he was seconded to Galician Infantry Regiment No. 15 in Lviv as company commander.
In 1899 he was appointed chief of staff of the 30th Infantry Division in Lviv. On May 1, 1904, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
From April 3 to April 18, 1915, in place of Karol Durski-Trzaska, he served as commander of the Polish Legions. On May 1, 1915, he was retired with a simultaneous appointment to active duty for the duration of the war. On November 3, 1915 he was appointed titular field marshal lieutenant. On January 1, 1917, he was released from active duty, but on September 29 of that year he was reactivated and appointed commander of the city of Krakow.
