(DMOWSKI Roman, BUCHAN John. AUTOGRAPHS). Hogarth William - The works of ..., in a series of engravings:
With descriptions and a comment on their moral tendency, by the John Trusler. To which are added, anecdotes of the author and his works by J. Hogarth and J. Nichols. (2 vols.) London 1833. published by Jones and Co. (28 x 21.5 cm), pp. 116, [2]; [4], (117)-224, [4], 109 intaglios on separate plates, period leather binding.
On title pages in both volumes, handwritten autographs: "Roman Dmowski", while on the pre-title pages handwritten autographs: "Cambridge 11th August 1916 John Buchan". The present book was offered to Roman Dmowski by John Buchan on the occasion of his receiving an honorary doctorate for a series of lectures at Cambridge University.
During his stay in London in 1915-1917, Dmowski sought support for Polish affairs, but official British policy treated the Polish problem as an internal affair of Russia, and as a result, those in government positions met with him reluctantly. One of the few diplomats sympathetic to him was John Buchan (1875-1940), a Scottish writer, historian and politician, who managed to do credit to Dmowski by promoting him to his other high-ranking friends.
W. Hogarth (1697 - 1764), English painter and printmaker. He created genre scenes in satirical terms, moralistic graphic series and portraits. Binding: red leather with embossing and decorated spine, page edges gilt, no rubbing of binding, no yellowing of pages. Nice piece, great rarity.
