Paris, n.d. ca. 1840; bifolio, 17 x 22 cm.
Unique sample of a handwritten letter by Olimpia Chodźko to Victor Hugo. Olimpia Chodźko née Maleszewska (1797-1889) was the wife of Leonard Chodźko h. Kosciesza (1800-1871) historian, geographer, cartographer, emigration activist, who was one of the most important figures popularizing the Polish cause in France. Olimpia Khodzko was her husband's closest collaborator and co-author of many texts for the famous publication "La Pologne historique, litteraire monumentale et pittoresque, (...)" published in three volumes, and " La Pologne historique, litteraire, monumentale et illustrée (...)" published in one volume. Olimpia Chodźko sent at least two letters to Victor Hugo, which were the subject of the sale of the Third Polish-French Antiquarian Auction (items 231-232). The piece being sold is probably a sample of one of them. Note: On the back in pencil "Olympe Chodzko à V. Hugo. Very rare!
