Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: XF
Reference: Gumowski (Handbuch) 235, Kopicki 148 (R3), Stronczyński 175

A typologically rare, highly valued type of coin.

A Wielkopolska brakteat denarius with a representation of a head with long hair, in front, with the name of Saint Adalbert in the rim (+Z ADALBVSTI). This head was interpreted by some scholars / numismatists, due to the accompanying name, as a representation of the saint. However, denarii of this type are known with the name VOLDIS placed there. Boris Pashkevich also notes the "appearance of a rather secular prince." Thus, the invocation of St. Adalbert may have been a reference to the authority, "care" of the saint.

According to Stronczynski, the one-sided denarii can be treated as half-denarii, which is also confirmed by the metrology of the coins in this auction.

The second piece we have in the company's more than 20-year history. Another piece sold at the 15th GNDM auction for 41,300 PLN (st.2+, item 197).

Ex. An outstanding medieval collection from the 10th GNDM auction.

Mint: Gniezno.

Dating: 1239-1249.

Silver, diameter 14.7 mm, weight 0.20 g.
