Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: VF
Reference: Kopicki jak 6716 (R6), Fbg jak 436

Unlisted Friedensburg variant of the stamp with three stars on the sides of the Bishop, a variety shown only in Kalinowski's catalog as a 2006 Kunker auction item.

Ferdinand Friedensburg, in his study "Die Schlesischen Münzen des Mittelalters im auftrage des Schlesischen altertumsvereins," notes only a type with a single asterisk next to the Bishop. We have also not found a single auction listing of this variant, with only Kalinowski noting such a variety from a Kunker auction.

A coin for which one might be tempted to call it unique.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

Henry I of Wierzbno was bishop of Wrocław from 1302 to 1319 and was the first of the bishops of Wrocław to assume the title of prince. He came from the family of the Lords of Wierzbna. He is credited with creating an independent episcopal principality known as the Duchy of Nysa. In 1315 he organized an inquisition tribunal in Silesia, which handed down death sentences by burning at the stake. As a result, more than 50 people deemed heretics were burned. For unexplained reasons, Bishop Henry was excommunicated and called before the papal court in Avignon. He died on September 23, 1319, leaving behind no personal property. He was buried in the chancel of Wrocław Cathedral.
