Jagiellonians, Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572), obol 1546, Vilnius mint (R8).
The smallest denomination minted by King Sigismund II Augustus. The obols or half-denarii were most likely minted for the exchange of Świdnica half-pennies. The redemption rate of one half-penny was 3.5 denarii, or 3 denarii and one obol. The denomination was minted for only two years, in 1546 and 1547. Due to their small size and thickness and low silver purity, these coins are rarely found in good states of preservation. The presented coin is very nicely preserved with visible traces of silvering. It is a healthy and sound coin with no losses.
First vintage of Lithuanian obols, a VERY RARE coin!
