Literature: Kopicki 7326 (R7), CNG 65.a, Tyszkiewicz 40 Mk
A very rare Danzig penny of recent vintage.
The end of the legend on the obverse PRVS. Additionally, inverted letter V instead of A in GEDΛNENS.
Nicely minted and preserved.
Its rarity and value is evidenced by the fact that Tyszkiewicz values it at 40 marks in gold, ie:
- more than 6 Bydgoszcz thalers of Sigismund III from 1627-31 (6 mk each)
- 2 Danzig ducats of Sigismund III 1595-97 (20 mk each)
- 5 Bydgoszcz thalers of Wladyslaw IV with crown bust from 1633-35 (8 mk each)
- 8 thalers 1766 "armorials" (5 mk each)
- 10 thalers 1788 (4 mk each)
As for more contemporary valuations, Corpus Nummorum Gedanensis (2000) values this 1548 grosz at 1500 mk.
For comparison, CNG valuations for other rare coins:
- ort 1610 - 1800 zlotys (last listing 24 thousand).
- ort 1623 (date only in the rim, without 1-6 on the obverse) - 1800 zlotys (currently reaching up to 21 thousand at auctions).
Recommended for top collections or as a great capital investment.
