A coin minted for the Duchy of Opole and Racibórz by King John II Casimir of Poland.
Under a treaty between Ladislaus IV and Emperor Ferdinand III as part of outstanding dowries, the land of the Duchy of Opole and Racibórz was given as a pledge to the Republic. Ladislaus IV and then his brothers Charles Ferdinand Vasa and John Casimir minted three-carat coins at the mint in Opole as part of their right. Władysław IV and Jan Kazimierz with the title of King of Poland and Karol Ferdinand with the title of Prince of Poland and Bishop of Wrocław. The coins were minted according to the ordinaries found in Silesia. Due to the fact that the Habsburgs, after buying out the pledge, forbade the circulation of coins of Polish issuers in the duchy and quickly withdrew them from circulation, only a very small number have survived to our times.
A portrait variety with a wider bust of the king. On the obverse, the ruler to the right, the obverse inscription IOAN CAS D G R(3)EX P & S M D L R P. On the reverse, coat of arms shield, otolithic inscription * MONETA NOVA REG POLON 1658.
Extremely rare and sought after coin, both by collectors of Crown coins and Silesian coins. A rarity!
