Lot description
Grade: AU
Reference: RIC -, Guillemain 282 (1 ex. cited only)

Sol was the favorite and most frequently depicted God of the Roman pantheon in Probus' coinage. There are numerous variants of reverses with Sol; however the depiction of Sol in quadriga (left or central/spread) remains undoubtedly an iconic, classis reverse for Probus . This reverse type was struck in Lugdunum, Rome, Ticinum, Siscia, Serdica and Kyzikos mints, with each mint having its unique style. Guillemain only cites one example if this exact type!  Apparently only the second known example! Consular bust type with wide wreath ties of the corona radiata (scarcer variant than the usual variant with joined ties) Virtually as struck, with full silvering and stunning details, especially on the reverse (see e.g. face of Sol!).

OBVERSE: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P AVG
REVERSE: SOLI INVICTO = Sol in spread quadriga, holding whip and globe
BUST TYPE: H2 = Radiate bust left in consular robe, holding eagle-tipped sceptre (scipio)
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//R*E
WEIGHT 3.55g / AXIS: 12h / DIAMETER: 21-23mm
