Germany, Weimar Republic, 3 marks 1929, G. E. Lessing, men. Munich, designed by R. Bosselt. Silver, 14.9 g, 30.3 mm. AKS 82. Condition III, traces of circulation. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing from the Upper Lusatian town of Kamenz is a leading philosopher and writer of the German Enlightenment. Germans revere him greatly (a 1981 5-mark coin was still dedicated to him), though they understand little. Economical in expression, the brilliantly composed 3-mark coin is one of the best coins of the world of the interwar period. |
