Lot description
Australia – 1 Dollar - Swan/Goose Dollar – Pattern 1967

By Andras Meszaros for Pinches in London (1500 issued). 1967. A swan flying left; AUSTRALIA and a crown below / A large "100" over a floral design. Milled edge. FDC. Among other similar auction results, Stacks Bowers sold a comparable example for $1100 in August 2019.Ex Coin Galleries (8 November 1995) lot 1694 (tag included). The Australian swan was a Pinches production that is both beautiful and has commanded strong bidding in sales we reviewed. When decimal currency came to Australia in 1966 no dollar coin was planned so a competition by a numismatic magazine (Australian Coin Review) resulted in this winning design by Andor Meszaros. The Australian mint did not mint a dollar coin until 1984. Competition organizers decided to issue the swan dollar privately and it has become a sought-after part of Australian numismatics.
