Lot description Show orginal version
Estimations: 575 - 698 EUR
gray stoneware, salt glaze; cobalt,
At bottom rim and hanging hole stabilizing silicone restorations;
height 3.2 cm, diameter 36 cm; handwritten engraved signature on bottom: May/ 1883/ P.Düml[n?]r
Germany, Höhr (Rhineland)?, copy - replica (?) of Peter Dümler's (1860-1907) Minerva profile platter from ca. 1875-1878, 19th/20th c. - 20th century.
Flat platter-dish with Neo-Renaissance decoration: around the collar a relief in quadrilateral arrangement, with female masks with volutes and escutcheons alternating with a bird (owl) head above the wings with a motif of escutcheons, mustaches and stylized flowers; in the mirror a right female profile (head) in a helmet with a crest with feathers, decorated in flat relief with bands of decoration with scenes of the Trojan War ( with Achilles, Hector, Priam), on the right a semicircular inscription: MINERWA, on the left a small isosceles cross.
The strong resemblance to the Minerva plate in the British Museum's collection, one of a pair of Neo-Renaissance pieces by 19th-century German ceramicist working with stoneware - Peter Dümler of Höhr (Minerva plate and Mars plate), indicates that the offered plate may be a copy of a London museum piece (made contemporary with the original?). This belief is reinforced by the not the best technological quality, the color scheme limited to cobalt (no manganese purple), the inferior quality of the reliefs, especially the Neo-Renaissance collar decoration, and the plain background around the bust and the slightly different typeface in the inscription.
There are no known examples of Dümler's signed wares; the date 1883 in the signature is the year he, together with his brother-in-law Albert Breiden, founded the firm Dümler & Breiden in Höhr-Grenzhausen, producing, among other things, antique Neo-Renaissance copies.
