Picasso, who was interested in and engaged with ceramics from an early age (he made his first works in this technique as early as 1901-1906 in Paris), returned to it in the 1940s, when he settled on the Côte d'Azur. At that time he made the acquaintance of a married couple of ceramists, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, owners of the Madoura factory in Vallauris - a town that had been a center of pottery and artistic ceramics for centuries. The artist collaborated with the Madoura atelier constantly, staying there repeatedly and for extended periods of time between 1947 and 1953, then continuing the collaboration less intensively until 1971. The output of these years was cataloged by Alain Ramié in a source publication, and the former headquarters of the factory now houses a museum of ceramic works by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall and other artists associated with it.
