Commemorative plate Excelsior Hotel Roma
White plate, decorated with a yellow hand-painted border, in the style characteristic of Excelsior Hotel souvenirs. On the back is a handmade signature: Hotel Excelsion Roma.
The Excelsior Hotel was opened in Rome, in 1906. It hosted many Hollywood stars, including the cast and crew of the 1959 film Ben-Hur. Among others, one of the masterpieces of world cinema, Fellini's "Sweet Life", was filmed in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, while in the hotel itself, "Two Weeks in Another City", directed by Vincente Minnelli (Liza's father), with Kirk Douglas, was shot in 1962. In 1983, excerpts from the miniseries The Winds of War were also filmed at the hotel, and in 2009, one of the scenes from the film Nine, starring Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard. The hotel is distinguished by its distinctive dome, under which the two-story "Villa la Cupola" suite occupies the 5th and 6th floors. Considered one of the most expensive hotel rooms in the world, it features, among other things, hand-painted frescoes, seven bedrooms and a private cinema.
