Edition 2. The first of three historical novels that are part of the Trilogy, written by Henryk Sienkiewicz "for the enrichment of hearts" in the hard times of the partitions. The novel is set in the years 1648-1651, during the Khmelnytsky uprising in Ukraine. The novel was originally published in episodes in 1883-1884 in the Warsaw daily "Słowo" and, with minimal delay to "Słowo," also in the Cracow daily "Czas." The first book edition was published in 1884 in Warsaw. Later that year, a second edition was offered.
