Gniezno, 1876 pp. 75, 7k. plates with illustrations; format 14x22 cm
The deep excavation is one of the most important finds of medieval Polish coins.
"He plowed... On October 3, 1872, in the village of Głębokie in the Grand Duchy of Poznan, the... A clay pot, hit by a plowshare, broke into pieces, and the thin tin coins scattered from it over the field were spread far from the place of plowing by the strong wind of that time. The finder, having spotted the silver in them, began to hurriedly collect what he could in his pocket, thus crumbling into small pieces whatever came into his hands....
The owner of the land... only over the evening learned of the plowing of this treasure and immediately about 1,600 pieces, coming from it, redeemed the money....
In 10 days afterwards, X. Canon Polkowski, and he was only sincerely concerned with the whole excavation, he recognized the place where it was found, he buried it himself ... in a word, he fulfilled everything that only a zealous numismatist and expert in a similar situation is obliged to do, and gave me a very detailed information about the state of affairs.... referring ... to the more detailed description which X. Polkowski announced and which left the press in Gniezno in 1876...".
Tables and numerous drawings of coins in the text.
