The translator of Leo Tolstoy's novel (commonly known as "Resurrection"), originally published in episodes in 1899, was Sanok-born Wlodzimierz Lewicki (1868-1909), a lawyer, playwright and publicist. He collaborated with numerous periodicals, was an amateur literary artist, and over time became very successful as an effective criminal defense attorney. He faced "charges [...] of dishonest professional activity and immoral conduct in his private life" (Wikipedia). He died in his own apartment on Slawkowska Street in Krakow, shot in the head; the question of whether it was suicide or murder remained unanswered.
The Polish translation of Tolstoy's novel (as "Resurrection") first appeared in the pages of St. Petersburg's "Kraj" in 1899. As A. Semczuk ("Lev Tolstoy," War. 1967, p. 342), three other Polish translations of "Resurrection" were published in 1900, which testifies to the great popularity of this work among the reading public. Levitsky's translation, produced at the same time, did not live to see print.
