LubinCODE (Legend of St. Hedwig). A two-volume publication containing: a) a facsimile of the codex, written down in 1353 by Mikolaj Pruzia in Lubin, and b) a scholarly commentary and a bilingual (Latin-German) edition of the manuscript. The facsimile remarkably accurately reflects the form of the original, richly illuminated manuscript. As in other such editions, special care has been taken to ensure that the colors of the illustrations and even the paper itself (including stains, losses, etc.) do not deviate from the original version. The text is illustrated with 60 miniatures depicting the life of the saint by an anonymous illuminator, most likely educated in Bohemia. They constitute a pearl of miniature painting. The facsimile includes 204 numbered pages in pencil. Since the original codex is now in The J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, the facsimile remains essentially the only way to interact with the manuscript. The second volume of the publication contains texts and commentaries by W. Braunfels, J. Krás, K. Kratzsch, P. Morav. - Issued by Gebr. Mann Verlag, Berlin 1972. 408 + 231 pp, case, dimensions: 26 x 37 cm; st. bdb., cloth binding with embossed floral motifs, signboards with gilded titles on the spine.

The initiator of the writing of the codex was Duke Ludwig I of Brzeg (d. 1398) of the Silesian Piast dynasty, great-great-grandson of Jadwiga of Silesia. He commissioned the codification of the Legend of his ancestress in connection with the approaching 100th anniversary of her canonization (1367). He was supported in this endeavor by the Bishop of Wroclaw Przeclaw of Pogorzela. The codex was created on the outskirts of Lubin, most likely in front of the Glogow Gate. It contains two lives of St. Hedwig ("greater" and "lesser"), a prayer to her as patroness of Silesia, homilies of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and a bull and sermon of canonization by Pope Clement IV delivered on the occasion of her elevation to the altar.
