plater, electroplated silver on "new silver", Germany, circa 1880.
A beautiful pair of candlesticks of impeccable historicizing form and precise workmanship. On a quadrilateral foot, dismembered and decorated with puckering, volutes and floral motifs, baluster shanks of rich plastic and decorated with floral festoons. Cup-shaped sleeves. On the edge of the foot the marking "WMF" and "GALW". The object was made electroplated by silver plating the metal. This method is known in Poland as "new silver" and was used for tableware since the mid-19th century (e.g. Fraget's products). On first impression it is indistinguishable from silverware. Good state of preservation, with traces of use.
