The dramas of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, which were successfully published in the post-war period through the efforts of the National Culture Fund of the Krakow Province, reviewed in late 1950: "The book contains two stage plays - written in language that rather resembles the gibberish of a seriously ill person in a maligna - (...) "In a Small Manor" - is a comedy - one might say - of manners. The content of the comedy is macabre and nonsensical - (...) Despite all this, the play is better and more realistic than the social play "The Cobblers". In this play, (...) the characters speak in a language that is a confusion of obscure philosophy and vulgar gibberish. The whole play is a bizarre tangle of unhealthy eroticism, decadence, obscure views - all in a sauce of grim pessimism and macabre. Perhaps that in both plays one could find positive well, at least intentions, but the manner of execution incomprehensible and nonsensical for a normal, sane reader - would already disqualify the book. Both plays, despite the assurances of the author of the afterword that they are "human comedies," give the impression of being written by an abnormal man and intended for abnormal people. (...) There are 1564 pieces of the book left, to distribute them through the "House of Books" should not be considered harmful. It seems strange that similar works appeared in print at all in 1948."
