The drama was first staged in 1925 at the National Theater in Warsaw by Juliusz Osterwa, and then repeatedly throughout the twentieth century. In 1937 Jerzy Zawieyski wrote the play The Return of Przełęcki, in which he described the further fate of the characters and the People's University.
The piece tells the story of Edward Przełęcki, a scientist and social activist, who, in cooperation with teachers, intends to establish a people's university in Porebany. However, the teacher Dorota Smugoniowa falls in love with Edward. Edward, despite the affection he also has for Dorota, deliberately causes a scandal to compromise himself in her eyes. He does this in order to save the Smugonian marriage and the idea of a people's university. He then leaves the village.
