The book, published in 1925 in a finally free Poland, caused much misunderstanding. Żeromski was reproached for his Cassandrian tone and even (nothing new) for defiling his own nest. And yet he was right to show through the fate of Cezary Baryka the immensity of idealization and expectations of an independent Poland, and the brutal reality of poverty, social inequality, bloated political platitudes, and ideological confusion.
