Piece bearing a dated dedication (28 March 1921, Warsaw) by Stefan Żeromski to the eminent literary historian, professor at Jagiellonian University, co-founder of the Warsaw Scientific Society, Ignacy Chrzanowski.
The first edition of a psychological drama by Stefan Żeromski. The action takes place in the Eastern Borderlands. The main character is Wincenty, a melancholic and unfulfilled idealist, plunged into incurable marasm. Out of love for his cousin, he becomes responsible for the death of a man and breaks off relations with his mother, which intensifies his internal conflicts. Ibsen's conflicts of conscience are clearly discernible in the work. In his drama, Żeromski depicts the complexity of the human psyche and the moral dilemmas faced by individuals.
The drama opened in 1919 at Juliusz Osterwa's famous experimental Reduta Theater . The play was a great success.
