First edition of Zegadłowicz's then controversial book, after the publication of which he lost his honorary citizenship of Wadowice
The novel was published in 1936 as part of the second autobiographical series "Żywot Mikołaja Srebrempisanego". The action of the novel, depicting the years of adolescence and junior high school education of the cycle's protagonist, was placed by the author in Volkowice (or Wadowice),a typical western Galician town from before World War I. The suggestion of authenticity (many real characters, sometimes under real names), combined with the drastic nature of the erotic scenes, the anticlerical and anarchist tendency, and finally the pamphlet-like criticism of provincial customs and the school system - caused a heated polemic, during which Zegadłowicz was stripped of his honorary citizenship of Wadowice.
