Acrimonious criticism of Kornel Makuszyński's works
First edition
, "Among the writer's greatest critics was the Lvov poet Jan Zahradnik, who in 1927 even published a pamphlet , "Kornel Makuszyński in a concave mirror":
"The man in question loaded the bookstore shelves with dozens of volumes of his books; the public immediately emptied the shelves and waited for a new shipment. The man finally filled hundreds of columns in magazines; these magazines began to be bought for his columns."
Zahradnik expressed regret that Zeromski's works, although undoubtedly of a higher order, would never reach similar circulation. He also accused Makushinsky of being, in fact, a secondary writer who could never overcome his own limitations. This was most evident in poetry, when he remained exclusively an epigone of Slowacki and Staff. His famous sense of humor, on the other hand, was to be modeled on Sienkiewicz's novels and Boy-Zeleński's literary translations.''
