Xu Beihong ( Chinese :徐悲鴻; ) (July 19, 1895 - September 26, 1953) was a Chinese painter born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province. He was primarily known for his ink paintings ofhorses and birds and was one of the first Chinese artists to express the need for artistic expression reflecting modern China in the early 20th century .He was also considered one of the first to create monumental oil paintings with epic Chinese motifs - a demonstration of his high proficiency in the basic technique of Western art. He was one of the four pioneers of Chinese modern art who earned the title of "Four Presidents of the Great Academy."
