Władysław Syrokomla, actually Ludwik Władysław Franciszek Kondratowicz (1823-1862), was a Polish poet, translator and publicist of the Romantic era. Born in Smolhov in the Borderlands, he came from the indigent nobility of the Syrokomla coat of arms. He wrote storytelling, folk poems and travel sketches, signing himself as a "village lyricist." He translated Lermontov and Goethe, among others. He was a supporter of the enfranchisement of peasants and a participant in patriotic demonstrations. He died in Vilnius and was buried on Ross.
