Lot description Show orginal version
Estimations: 21 EUR

Orpheus in the Hell of the Twentieth Century is Józef Wittlin's most important book. The topics it deals with - the crisis of moral values, the impact of wars on human consciousness, ethical conflicts, issues of the writer's duty, diagnoses of exile attitudes, meditations on existential and cultural experiences of death - mark the most intellectually moving issues of the 20th century. According to the author, this is an "unintentional and uncomposed autobiography," a self-portrait "despite the will painted in installments, in pieces, without a unified plan and without a mirror."
According to researchers - a unique essayistic magnum opus.
For the reader - a fascinating read, in which the validity of the issues raised adjoins humor, irony and intellectual banter.

Year of publication 1963, Format 215 x 135 mm, 655s.

Published by the Literary Institute in Paris, in the series Library of "Culture" (volume 85).

Piece in DB condition (light scuffing of the spine and some soiling).
