The theme of the novel, written in 1926, is "the experiences of a band of degenerate ex-people against the background of mechanizing life." Among its protagonists we find the main characters of Witkiewicz's works: an unfulfilled artist, a demonic woman, the leader of a revolutionary movement, representatives of the aristocratic elite. Faced with an impending catastrophe - the revolution - they search for the mystery of existence, chafe between art and life, debauchery, drugs and philosophizing. The downfall of Athanasius Bazakbal, the novel's protagonist, and society takes place in parallel. The communist leader Sajetan Tempe wins. The picture of new life under the Nivelists is a prophetic representation of the rise of a totalitarian state.
