WITKIEWICZ Jan Stanisław - Male Nude

add Your note
Lot description Show orginal version

The first documented photograph of a naked man was taken a year after the invention of the method of capturing images appearing inside the camera obscura, or photograph (1839). The model posed without moving for twenty-five minutes, for that is how long the exposure lasted at the time. This early shot, however, does not mean that many photographs of this type were created in the following years.

Jan Stanislaw Witkiewicz, a writer and publicist, is the author of a pioneering work in Poland: he exhibited a series of photographs called "Male Nude." The show at the Gallery in Struve's Villa was accompanied by this elegantly published album.

Witkiewicz's quest proves that after years of experimentation and quirks, photography has returned to its sources.

Published by the Gallery at the Struve Villa, 2006.
