In a poem published in 1883 in Lviv, Wincenty Pol created the character of a Christian knight-patriot, whose prototype was the Great Hetman of the Crown Jan Tarnowski (1488-1561). The author described in the form of rhymed storytelling various regions of old Poland, beginning with Lithuania and ending with the territories of western Galicia. Complementing the six rhapsodies are numerous genre illustrations by Juliusz Kossak.
