The book was originally published under the title"The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts," in 1898; the title was changed to the current one in 1911.
The author, Arthur Edward White, was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. This was an occult and esoteric society formed in the second half of the 19th century in London. It broke up in the early 20th century into small groups scattered around the world. The association drew on the Rosicrucian tradition, and the focus was on magic, alchemy, astrology and other fields of esotericism, including tarot, for which it developed its own peculiar version.
The book includes numerous rituals and spells of transcendental, black and ritual magic, with numerous illustrations of seals, symbols and necessary artifacts.
The book is in English.
