The author of the equally famous The Time Machine insightfully depicts the behavior of individuals and communities facing total war. First published in 1898, The War of the Worlds was regarded years later as a prophetic work - not least because of its description of the use of technological advances for mass destruction.
In 1938 American director and actor Orson Welles prepared a radio play inspired by War of the Worlds, the broadcast of which caused panic among listeners.
