Index 444-447

"Although from an early age he assisted his father, who was a clockmaker in his spare time, in repairing clocks, he became a clockmaker by accident. He began his watchmaking apprenticeship for several months after the outbreak of war in 1939 in Ivatsevichi Poleski, where he found himself as a result of his September wanderings. Upon his return to Niepokalanów in 1940, at the behest of Fr. Kolbe, he set up a watch repair shop and simultaneously taught watchmaking to his confreres. In February 1941, the occupiers arrest Fr. Kolbe and deport him to the Pawiak prison and later to Auschwitz, where he suffered a martyr's death. Brother Lawrence, also threatened with arrest, left Niepokalanów and hid in his native Bieszczady Mountains. After returning to the monastery again in 1942, he passed the journeyman's exam in the watchmaking profession, and after the war, in early 1946. - master's exam. In addition, from 1949 to 1951 he completed a three-year correspondence course in watchmaking at the British Horological Institute in London.

The writing of a watchmaking manual was suggested to Brother Lawrence even during the war by Father Maximilian Kolbe. The first two volumes in the "Watchmaking" series, with subtitles: volume I "History , Science and Work" and volume II "Watchmaking Materials and Spare Parts," were published in 1948. In the following years, further volumes were published, which were already co-authored by Brother Bernard Bartnik, although only the name of Brother Wawrzyniec Podwapiński is mentioned on the title page: volume III "Machines, tools and utensils of the watchmaker" in 1949, volume IV " Time, cosmography and sundials" in 1950, Volume V "Tower Clocks" in 1952, and Volume VI "Clocks and Mechanical Watches" in 1956. Every few years, further volumes were published with the names of both authors already on them: volume VII "Workshop Technology" in 1962, volume VIII "Repair of Clocks and Mechanical Watches" in 1967, and volume IX "Electric Single Timepieces" in 1974.

The last three volumes were published after the death of his brother Lawrence Podwapinski: volume X "Electric Team Clocks" in 1980, volume XI "Clocks and Special Timepieces - Construction, Operation and Repair" in 1985, and volume XII "Illustrated Dictionary of Watchmaking" in 1990." source: https://kmziz.pl/warto-wiedziec/brat-wawrzyniec-maria-aleksander-podwapnski-1903-1983
