First edition of the most important work of M. Wańkowicz (1892-1974) - writer, reporter, publicist, one of the most original individuals in Polish literature of the 20th century.
During the fighting in Italy, he worked as a war correspondent for General Anders' Second Polish Corps and witnessed and participated in the events he described.
The book, which perpetuates the legend of the Battle of Monte Cassino, is a classic position in the field of war reportage. The extensive account of the battle and the period preceding it is embellished with nearly 2,000 photos and photomontages. Wańkowicz's book was not published domestically until 1957, but in a very truncated form by the censors.
