Lot description

Warsaw, 1809, at the Printing House of the Priests of the Faith. 12.5x19.5 cm, pp. (8), XX, (2), 420, portrait of Franciszek Dmochowski before title page (copperplate engraving by Jan Ligber), half leather binding. Good condition (spine expertly repaired, trace of dampstain on all pages, ownership signature on title page).

First edition. Virgil's epic poem translated by Franciszek Dmochowski (1762-1808), Polish poet, translator and social activist. Dmochowski was unable to complete the translation; the last three books were translated by Wincenty Jakubowski. Originally, the edition was to be bilingual, Latin-Polish, but the publisher, wanting to speed up publication, abandoned the original intention.
