...... a Warsaw-based illustrated cultural and social periodical, published between 1859 and 1939, founded by Jozef Ungra. The magazine was not affiliated with any political option, and published a great deal of historical material and literary works, and also included reproductions of works of art.; In addition to publishing the magazine, the editors undertook a number of publishing campaigns. These consisted of novel supplements attached to the magazine (mainly from foreign literature), as well as publishing series (including a 10-volume collection of works by Karol Szajnocha; and a collective edition of Kraszewski's works) The editors also organized numerous social actions, including collections to help the families of writers, as well as for various national initiatives (including the construction of a monument to Adam Mickiewicz; in Cracow, the establishment of a museum of Nicolaus Copernicus in Rome and the creation of a scholarship named after him). The magazine supported itself by subscriptions. In 1859 the number of subscribers was 3,000, while by the end of the century it approached 11,000. During the interwar period the magazine's popularity gradually declined until it became an undistinguished literary magazine.
