Robert John Thorton (1768-1837) - was one of the most fascinating writers on botany, influenced by Professor Thomas Martyn, who introduced him to Linnaeus' sexual system of plants. Appointed a lecturer in medical botany in 1796, he began publishing his works on botany, all with elaborate engravings. The enormous costs of illustration and printing began to reduce his personal wealth.
