(...)The presented work is unique in at least several respects.It is probably the most criticized work devoted to the Napoleonic era, and at the same time the object of the most fierce polemics. On the other hand, it is the work in which people read most eagerly for decades. The author himself, having once visited his friend, saw The History of the Consulate and the Empire on the host's favorite coffee table next to the works of Plato and Tacitus. "As you can see," the friend stated with a smile, "you are lying in good company" . Even if it is difficult to speak of Thiers as a "classicist" during his lifetime, he undoubtedly became such over time. His work could be hated, but not to know him was a sin(...)
