(Estr. T. 31, this edition does not note). At the beginning of the printed letter-dedication of Erasmus of Rotterdam to Jan and Stanislaus Boner, 1532. In the dedication Erasmus praises Sigismund I and the Polish bishops. He justifies the dedication of Terentius to the young Boners on the grounds that he considers the teaching of Latin on this comedy writer to be the best. For this laudatory footnote, Erasmus received from Sew. Boner two gold medals. Terentius (ca 190-159 a. C.) - the last outstanding Roman comedy writer of Libyan origin (hence the nickname Afer). He wrote 6 comedies, all extant. The work contains all of his comedies: Andria (The Girl of Andros), Hecyra (The Spleen), Heautontimorumenos (The Self-Torturer), Eunuchus (The Eunuch), Phormio (The Formion) and Adelphoe (The Brothers). To which is added an introduction by Philip Melanchthon and a valuable commentary by Elias Donatus (4th century) - a prominent grammarian and rhetorician, teacher of St. Jerome. Notes on the front pastedown, stamp on title page, binding: board, period pigskin with embossing, 1 buckle preserved. Abrasions of the binding. Good condition. Rare.
