At the Threshold of the Sahara was written after a several week trip to Tunis made in the spring of 1924, organized by Prof. Heinrich Brockmann--Jerosch of Zurich. The route led through the eastern Atlas Mountains to the Sahara.

Władysław Szafer (1886-1970),outstanding botanist--plant geographer (phytogeographer), paleobotanist,historian and popularizer of biology, co--author of nature conservation. He was a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, director of the Botanical Institute and Botanical Garden, as well as a professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences.
