"The images of the 'Piasts' were created in connection with the intended staging (actually abandoned) of Wyspianski's drama 'Skałka' [...]. The artist tried to make the depicted images resemble messages from history and legends. The likenesses, without unnecessary details and decorative embellishments, are full of noble simplicity and restraint, qualities relatively rare in Stryjeńska" (M. Grońska "Zofia Stryjeńska", Wr. 1991, p. 25, illustr. 51-56). "Warchałowski valued [...] this series, and although he generally exaggerated in his admiration, in this case he was right. 'Piasts' is probably one of the painter's best cannon" (H. Mortkowicz-Olczakowa "Under the Sign of the Spike," War. 1962, p. 175).
