"Immensee" (first published in 1849) is the most famous of the novellas by Theodor Storm (1817-1888), one of the most important representatives of German realism. Due to the rich symbolism present in the novella, "Immensee" has been variously interpreted over the years and has lived to see such diverse screen adaptations as a story serving Nazi propaganda(Immensee: A German Folk Song, 1943), and a romantic Bollywood film(I Have Already Given My Heart, Sweetheart, 1999).
