Smołucha-Składkowska Agnieszka - Private Medals in the First Republic (from the 16th to the 18th century), Krakow 2022, ISBN 9788375813944
58 pages, soft cover, illustrated catalog (over 80 color, often enlarged photos) of the exhibition accompanying the XVI International Numismatic Congress: "Medal Privately. Private Medals in the First Republic (from the 16th to the 18th century)," prepared by the National Museum in Cracow. The book discusses the issue of private medals in Poland from the reign of Sigismund the Old, at whose court this artistic form appeared, to the times of Stanislaw August Poniatowski, a numismatic enthusiast and collector. Chapters: Around the Jagiellonian court. Gradual popularization; The seventeenth century - hetmans, magnates, bishops; The development of Gdansk medallic art; Medals of church hierarchs in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; The Stanislaus times; The non-obvious functions of medals and their private character. The catalog presents the development of private medallic art in the period of the First Republic, where many of them equalled royal medals in artistic class. Special attention has been paid to the personal character of medals, rather than exclusively to their official and representative functions. Presented are commemorative medals, award medals, objects of medal character (counters, gaming tokens) and medal-decorated artistic craftsmanship. The medals presented come from the collections of the National Museum in Cracow - from the Numismatic Cabinet (including many from the collection of Count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski) and from the collection of the Czartoryski Princes, as well as from the Cracow Museum, the National Museum in Poznan and the Numismatic Cabinet of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. This is the first publication of its kind.
