The dictionary is a description of the historical lands as well as the regions, cities, villages and settlements lying in the areas that the First Republic covered within its historical borders. The geographical scope includes the Kingdom of Poland, the Russian Baltic gubernias, the western gubernias and part of the southern gubernias, Prussia, Pomerania, the Grand Duchy of Posen and Prussian and Austrian Silesia, Galicia, Moravia, the Bukovina area and Slovakian lands belonging to Hungary. The entries also include descriptions of rivers, lakes and mountain peaks. They contain data on geographic and administrative location, statistical and demographic data, religious data, and a lot of information on schools, industry and trade, transportation, agriculture. An important part includes brief historical features, names of successive owners of landed estates and industrial-processing facilities, as well as state, local government and religious officials and prominent citizens. It gives information on population, agriculture, crafts, industry, trade, communications, buildings, peasant and manor lands. It is a compedium of knowledge of the last quarter of the 19th century collected in a very modern way for those years, because by local correspondents cooperating with the Dictionary's editors.
