Spines and edges of binding, lightly rubbed, spine of vol. 2 lightly cracked, overstickers of vol. 1 cracked, paper losses of pre-title pages supplemented, internally good condition. Vol. 1: Texts, vol. 2: Commentary. Vol. 1 was published in an edition of 1,100 copies, this one No. 863. Vol. 2 appeared without an edition date. A monumental edition of Słowacki's unfinished masterpiece. The Pawlikowskis, father and son, published Słowacki's poem with a 500-page commentary based on manuscripts. According to popular opinion, this work has rightly earned for itself in science, and not only in Poland, the name of one of the most outstanding achievements of the art of editing. For his study of Słowacki's works, Jan Gwalbert was awarded the dignity of member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. The text of both volumes printed in frames on good, wood-free paper. The fold-out plates contain facsimiles of Słowacki's manuscripts. At the end of the first volume a list of subscribers is given. These were mainly university professors, grammar school professors, a few lawyers, financiers, libraries and bookstores. Volume two contains, in addition to a commentary, a discussion of all existing manuscripts of the work, their appearance and form, text varieties and editions. In addition, it includes two articles: "On the reading of the Ghost King and the use of the commentary" and "A glance at Slowacki's mysticism and the leitmotifs of the Ghost King."
