In "Lilia Weneda," as in "Balladyna," Słowacki reached back to the prehistory of Poland, which the science of history could not yet put into a fully scientific system. However, he reached farther into the past than in "Balladyna," namely to the period of the birth of Polish statehood, and in a poetic portrayal of those times gave a peculiar solution to the question of the rise of the Polish nobility and its role in the history of the old Polish state.
